There are hundreds of wireless earbuds out there, and the spec sheets can be confusing. Here’s what makes a real difference when you choose a pair.
1. Fit comes first
Great sound means nothing if they fall out. In-ear buds with silicone tips seal the ear and give better bass and noise blocking. Semi in-ear buds sit more loosely – comfortable for long wear, but they let in more outside sound. For sport, look for ear hooks or wing tips.
2. Active Noise Cancellation (ANC)
ANC uses microphones to cancel out steady background noise like taxis, aircon or office chatter. It’s worth it if you commute or work in noisy spaces. A transparency mode is handy so you can hear announcements without taking the buds out.
3. Battery life – read it correctly
Brands often quote the total with the charging case (for example “35 hours”). The number that matters day to day is playtime per charge – 5 to 8 hours is good. Fast charging (10 minutes for 1–2 hours of play) is a nice bonus.
4. Water and sweat resistance
- IPX4: sweat and splashes – fine for the gym.
- Check the exact rating: water-jet resistance and immersion resistance are different tests. Follow the manufacturer’s stated conditions for the exact model; do not assume the earbuds or charging case are suitable for swimming.
5. Calls and microphones
If you take lots of calls, look for buds with multiple microphones or “ENC” (environmental noise cancellation) for calls.
6. Specs you can mostly ignore
The latest Bluetooth version number matters less than you’d think – anything from Bluetooth 5.0 up is stable. Fancy codecs only help if your phone supports them too.
